Happy Belated Turkey Day!

November 23rd, 2007 (02:37 pm)

current mood: frustrated
current song: foo fighters - the pretender

I hope you all had fun for Thanksgiving!

Mine wasn't all that great though. Woke up early to get phone calls to the family and my girl then proceeded to go out for another walk to get some more geocaching done. Of course the first one was one that I've had trouble finding before and still haven't found yet but I had great hopes for the next three that I was going to get. It involved a relitivly short five mile walk to start the trail but somehow, with all my technological gear in hand I got on the wrong street and took a three mile detour before realizing my mistake and getting back on the correct path. Finally making to the trails start I had begun to tire but I was bound and determined to finish this trail before heading back. The first part of the trail was fairly nice and I had a good time walking along and exploring some of the small caves that were dug into the side of the hill to let water run through. As soon as I crossed the stream on my way to the first cache though, it changed into a grueling ordeal. Somehow I lost the path and found myself scrambling on all fours just to maintain forward progress. Less then a quarter mile to the cache I became so tired and the going became so difficult that I had to go back. This failure seemed to get the best of me and I began thinking of all of the stuff I was missing and started to get angry.

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for the good things in life and I realize that I have a lot to be thankful for in terms of good health, family, girlfriend, and friends, but on that hike back to the barracks all I could think about was the fact that I was not celebrating with them this holiday and the fact that it costed so much money just to see them for New Years Eve because the command did not confirm our leave periods until a few weeks before we had to take them. The fact that I would be gone again for ten months out of the year for deployments didn't sit very well with me either. With this I arrived angry and frustrated at the base.

Entering the barracks some of my friends greeted me and were wondering how I did that day. In my state I couldn't even maintain a conversation so I packed up my computer and made the short walk over to one of the MWR's (Morale, Welfare, & Recreation) to unwind. I arrived to see that they hadn't opened it for Thanksgiving and the next MWR was so packed with people that it would've just been like a pressure cooker for me. Now I added the fact that I couldn't unwind to the list of things as I walked back to the barracks. One of my friends there tried to invite me to a movie that a bunch of them were going to. The movie is called The Fog and it's based on one of Steven King's novels that I had enjoyed a short time ago. My feet were killing me because of the nearly 25 mile walk that I'd done, my anger hadn't subsided, and I was becoming tired so I declined not wanting to drag my friends into my foul mood. Sleep came and this day seems a little brighter.

It is okay, the day just brought to mind how far away I've gotten from friends and family. It will not be too long before I take some leave and rectify that problem. :)
