To ponder for a while..

current mood: enthralled
current song: Anastacia - Everything Burns

I remember stories of a glorious civilization.
Of cities with spires that reached the sun.
Of a blue planet with vast seas.
Of people with myths of humanity everlasting.
Of children who saw, in the embers of dying stars...
The destiny of their race.

And they hurled themselves into the void of space with no fear.
They say our people have no present.
Only a past filled with horror.
And a future they can only dream of.
Now we forge a new alliance.
To guard the tome of space.
To find within its cold expanse...
The salvation of our race.

I finally just downloaded the cut scenes from Freespace 2. I love that game so much. The story gut checks me everytime I hear it. It is a story of hope, not only for the continued survival of our race but of the end of bigotry its self. I get chills every time I play because the game manages to humanize the mission critical items. You care when things go wrong and fight all the harder to win despite the odds.

Just thinking about the future and what it may hold. Kinda wondering what it would be like to engage in that type of endeavor. Of course I think of what our country is doing over in Iraq but that type of politics and saber rattling never really struck me as noble or grand. To conquer space would be something we could give our kids and be proud of. Of course the worry would be would we be as ignorant out in the vast darkness as we are in this small corner of the boonies we currently inhabit. Are we as a species not meant to expand our sphere of influence past our own solar system? I know for a fact that our imagination will not let us go out without trying. Will we end up like the terrans in a piece of fiction, hunted, bleeding, dying, gasping our last breath, and reaching with our last vestige of strength, to home?
